3. Fare Structure Basics (effective 01.04.2023)
3.1. Ordinary Mail/Express Reserved Fare components
- Base fare – per km slab (₹0.485 to ₹0.75 for SL; ₹1.95 for 1A)
- Reservation charge (₹): SL-20, 2S-15, 3A/2A-40, 1A-60
- Super-fast surcharge (₹) – if train ≥55 km/h avg: SL-45, 2S-15, 3A/2A/1A-75
- GST – 5 % on AC classes (1A, 2A, 3A, CC, EC, EA, 3E)
- Other levies – Safety surcharge (abolished 2016), Development fee (only at some stations, ₹10-50).
3.2. Platform Ticket
- ₹50/- (w.e.f. 01.04.2022) – valid 2 h; earlier ₹10 till 2019.
3.3. Penal Fares (important for TC papers)
- Without ticket / improper ticket – ₹250 + fare + difference of fare.
- Unauthorised travel in higher class – fare difference + ₹250 min.
- Excess luggage (above free allowance) – 6 times of normal luggage rate per kg.
- Child ≥5 & <12 yrs – half of adult fare (no berth) or full fare if berth sought.

5. Tatkal Scheme – Facts for MCQ
- Opening time: AC classes – 10:00 AM, Non-AC – 11:00 AM (1 day prior to DOJ, ex-originating).
- Minimum distance: 500 km (250 km for some Raj/Shatabdi).
- Maximum % premium over base fare: 1A-30 %, 2A-30 %, 3A-30 %, SL-30 %, CC-30 %.
- No concession (except senior citizen) & no refund on cancellation (unless train cancelled).
- Premium Tatkal (PT) – 30 % of Tatkal quota seats sold with dynamic pricing (like airline).
- Tatkal quota % of total accommodation – 10 % (SL), 20 % (AC classes) subject to minimum 2 berths.
6. Dynamic / Premium Fares
Rajdhani, Duronto, Shatabdi, Vande Bharat, Tejas, Humsafar, Gatimaan follow flexi-fare (not fully dynamic).
- Slabs: 10 % seats @ 1.0×, next 10 % @ 1.1× … up to 1.5× maximum (1A/EC capped at 1.4×).
- No concession (except Sr. Citizen 20 % on base after flexi), no break-journey, no change of boarding.
7. Suburban (EMU/MEMU) Fares – Unique Points
- Fare stage 0-5 km cheapest; every km slab thereafter.
- MST issued for calendar month (01-31) irrespective of purchase date.
- MST cost = 15 × single journey fare for II class; 25 × for I class (rounded to nearest ₹5).
- QST = 2.7 × MST cost.
- Smart card discount: 5 % on stored value (ATVM / R-Smart).
- Return journey ticket (UTS app) valid same day; distance ≤200 km.
